Sometimes an image becomes something truly special – even to the photographer himself.

This sheep portrait has probably become my best-known photograph. It has received several international awards, including Gold at the International Photography Awards (IPA) and a Special Mention at the Chianciano Biennale in Italy. I have also exhibited it on numerous occasions.

I am fascinated by the combination of the almost limitless whiteness of the wool and the animal’s direct, calm gaze. The fine textures and subtle contrasts draw the viewer’s attention to what really matters. In this way, what began as a simple animal portrait becomes an image that seems to resonate with people in many different ways.
