About
Artist's Statement
Black and white is, for me, the most fundamental form of photographic vision. It allows me to focus on light, form, and atmosphere while stripping away the unnecessary. My work explores calmness and space, clear structures, and the subtle emotions that only reveal themselves through careful observation.
My artistic approach was shaped early on by analog processes, where patience, precision, and a conscious handling of light were essential. These principles continue to guide my work today. Even though most images are now created in the digital darkroom, the process remains a careful, intensive engagement. Techniques such as light painting help to refine the image and lend the scenes a restrained, almost surreal quality.
Characteristic of my black-and-white photography are strong contrasts, clean lines, and a reduced visual language. Minimalism is never an end in itself, but a means to focus on what is essential. The resulting image spaces deliberately leave room for interpretation and personal experience.
My photographs invite viewers to pause, look more closely, and discover a quiet emotional depth that lies beyond the immediately visible.
Bio
Jens Winkler, an artist from Germany, discovered photography early. He began to work with his father’s camera and developed prints in a small photo lab before turning 18. This early engagement with analog techniques shaped his artistic approach.
In the 1990s, large-format photography became central to his work. Today, his focus is on black-and-white photography, where light, deep contrasts, and clear shapes define his visual language. His images, marked by space, minimalism, and balance, invite viewers to linger and reflect.
Much of his creative process unfolds in the digital darkroom, where he refines his photographs with techniques such as light painting, giving them a surreal quality. Inspired by masters like Ansel Adams and Michael Kenna, he has developed a distinctive style of his own.
His works have received numerous international awards and have been exhibited worldwide, including in Munich, Venice, London, New York, and Buenos Aires, placing him among the notable contemporary voices in black-and-white photography.
